Sony has surprise-released Helldivers 2 onto the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, making it available for Extra and Premium members. This addition coincides with the launch of a significant update, version 7.0.0, dubbed "Devoid of Liberty," and the long-awaited Warhammer 40,000 crossover, the Castellan's Creed Legendary Warbond.
Helldivers 2, which launched in early 2024, remains the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game on record. Sony highlighted the value proposition of PlayStation Plus, emphasizing the curated Game Catalog that features titles like The Last of Us Part I, God of War Ragnarök, and Ghost of Tsushima. "With the addition of Helldivers 2, a game that has already been enjoyed by millions of players worldwide, we’re further strengthening the value of PlayStation Plus and creating more opportunities for members to discover and engage with exceptional games," stated Mary Yee, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The company projects that the influx of new players through PlayStation Plus will allow newcomers to experience the game's cooperative gameplay alongside its established player base. As of August 9, 2026, Helldivers had been played by over 22.9 million individuals across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The "Devoid of Liberty" update introduces a new horror-themed narrative arc. Players will be tasked with confronting mutated Illuminate organisms that are emerging from a mysterious void in the galaxy. As the story progresses, this void will alter environments and transform familiar enemies into new, more grotesque forms, guiding players into a new biome.
In addition to the game's current content drop, a film adaptation of Helldivers is scheduled for theatrical release on November 10, 2027, produced by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. Actor Jason Momoa recently departed the project.
