Helldivers 2's ongoing community-driven campaigns have introduced a new objective: the construction of a "Celestial Fence" designed to repel the alien Terminid threat. This latest in-game event tasks players with defending construction sites and gathering resources to erect what Super Earth Command describes as a "flawless, updated, and entirely safe Terminid Control System wall" intended to "permanently quarantine" the Terminids. Success in this endeavor will reward players with the R-4 Hyena Marksmen rifle.
This initiative follows a previous campaign against the Illuminate, whose forces were reportedly sent to "humanitarian processing facilities." The game's narrative has a history of introducing seemingly benevolent solutions that inadvertently lead to further complications. For instance, Super Earth's prior attempt to deploy Termicide resulted in the emergence of a more dangerous Terminid strain and a subsequent order to dismantle the very control towers players had helped build.
The current "Celestial Fence" campaign, with its clear echoes of Donald Trump's US-Mexico border wall proposals, aligns with developer Arrowhead Studios' established satirical style. The Swedish studio, drawing inspiration from Paul Verhoeven's film Starship Troopers, consistently embeds commentary on authoritarianism and propaganda within Helldivers 2's gameplay. Previous in-game scenarios have involved players fighting on planets for their resources, reminiscent of oil conflicts, or battling "communist" cyborgs, all under the guise of "Managed Democracy" which often masks disastrous government policies and pointless wars.
While Helldivers 2's satire is overt, the developers acknowledge that some players may miss the underlying commentary, citing an instance where a US Marine used game dialogue during an anniversary event. Regardless of player reception to the satirical elements, Arrowhead appears committed to continuing its distinctive brand of commentary. The recent addition of the R-4 Hyena rifle follows other gameplay updates, such as improvements to diving reloads and buffs to stratagems and vehicles. The studio has also delayed its June Warbond for further development and confirmed a Warhammer 40K crossover is planned for later this year.
