Helldivers 2 Upgrades Anti-Cheat to Easy Anti-Cheat Amidst Mod Crackdown

Helldivers 2 is transitioning to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) from its current GameGuard system, a move developers Arrowhead state is aimed at bolstering security and curbing the use of cheat mods that can negatively affect the player experience.

In an announcement, Arrowhead acknowledged that GameGuard "wasn't as effective as it could have been" for Helldivers 2. The studio has opted for EAC, an industry-standard solution employed in over 200 games, including titles like Elden Ring and Fortnite. Arrowhead believes this change will serve as a more effective measure to protect the ongoing Galactic War and uphold the integrity of fair gameplay.

The implementation of Easy Anti-Cheat will also involve additional security tools designed to enhance its effectiveness. This shift is being utilized as an opportunity to address cheat mods more broadly. While Arrowhead recognizes the creative role mods play in PC gaming, particularly those that are cosmetic and do not impact other players, the focus is on protecting against modifications that provide unfair advantages or disrupt the experience for others.

Consequently, some mods, especially those that alter gameplay for other players, may cease to function. Non-malicious cosmetic mods might also require updates from their creators to remain compatible.

Players who encounter issues with non-destructive mods or other software being blocked by the new anti-cheat system are encouraged to contact Arrowhead's support via Zendesk. The developers aim to balance the need for security with an appreciation for modding culture, though the priority remains on preventing modifications that detract from the shared multiplayer experience.

The switch to Easy Anti-Cheat took place on October 20th. As Helldivers 2 continues its popular run, this measure signals a commitment to maintaining a fair and secure environment for its player base.
