Ubisoft has revealed a remake of the 1999 classic Heroes of Might and Magic 3, slated for release in 2027 on PC and consoles. The new version will transition from an isometric 2D perspective to a fully 3D world, incorporating new content such as a prologue campaign and cinematics, while also refining mechanics for greater accessibility.
Jean-Felix Monin, Creative Director at Ubisoft China, emphasized the importance of the dedicated Heroes of Might and Magic 3 fanbase in shaping the project. "We really want to do right by them," Monin stated, highlighting consultations with key community figures who have previously collaborated on related transmedia projects like the board game. These individuals provided consulting to help the development team navigate significant changes, including the shift to 3D with dynamic weather and seasons, and to serve as a guide for any gameplay adjustments.
"The gameplay is considered a masterpiece," Monin explained. The development team made an early decision to preserve the original game's systems and balance precisely as they were. This approach was intended to preemptively address concerns about altering a beloved game. "We couldn't destroy it because we didn't touch it," he added. The focus for added value was placed on graphical enhancements and quality-of-life features designed to ease modern players into the game's unique gameplay, which might present a barrier for newcomers.
The inclusion of a new prologue campaign serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it addresses the original game's lack of a robust tutorial, which relied heavily on a manual that modern players are less likely to consult. While a previous tutorial was attempted, it was not deemed successful. "We really thought there was a real need to teach this game to new players," Monin said. Secondly, the campaign will explore narrative threads that were previously unclear, specifically events preceding Catherine's arrival in Erathia and Antagarich. This prologue aims to ease players into both the story and the gameplay simultaneously.
The original Heroes of Might and Magic 3 received critical acclaim, scoring a 9 on IGN at its release and being lauded as a triumphant return for the series. Monin expressed a hope that the remake will evoke the same nostalgic feelings for longtime fans as the original did over two decades ago, with the expectation that this will, in turn, attract new players to the franchise.
