Heroes of the Storm is set to receive its first new playable character in six years with the upcoming arrival of Xal'atath. Blizzard President Johanna Faries revealed the news during the BlizzCon Opening Ceremony, confirming that the primary antagonist from World of Warcraft: Midnight will join the Nexus as a ranged assassin specializing in Void abilities.
Xal'atath's arrival marks a significant update for the long-standing MOBA, with the character's ability kit detailed by Blizzard. Her Trait, Void Volley, allows basic attacks to build Soul Essence, which can then be unleashed as a barrage of void bolts. This ability is tied to the Void Whispers quest, which offers progressive upgrades to range, charge speed, and empowered damage. The E ability, Dark Heart Ritual, summons a talisman that pulses void energy at nearby enemies and detonates on any Shadow-Marked hero. Xal'atath's W ability, Void Step, enables her to blink between three points in a triangular pattern, gaining attack damage at each stop, with the option to cancel early. Her Q ability, Shadow Mark, launches a large Void Orb that marks affected heroes, directing her Dark Heart to detonate at the impact point. For her Heroic abilities, Void Eruption channels a growing void orb that blinds enemies and dominates space before detonating, or can be cast on the Dark Heart for an instant, fully empowered eruption. Alternatively, Void Convergence summons a portal that spawns void minions to overwhelm opponents, with fallen minions being replaced until the portal ends or is destroyed.
Faries expressed gratitude to the game's dedicated player base, stating, "Thank you for believing in this game, for carrying the torch, and for reminding us sometimes - very loudly - what this game means to you." She also hinted at the possibility of future hero additions, suggesting players "stay tuned" for further announcements. Xal'atath is scheduled to join Heroes of the Storm later this month.
