Legendary game director Hideki Kamiya has once again stated his firm commitment to reviving Scalebound, the ambitious dragon-themed action-RPG that was canceled by Xbox nearly a decade ago. Kamiya, known for his work on titles such as Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, and Okami, expressed his continued desire to see the project through to completion.
In a recent interview, Kamiya confirmed that while he has not directly spoken with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma about a potential revival, he remains open to rekindling the professional relationship. "Now's my opportunity to once again say that if they want to do it, let's make it happen!" he stated. He also noted that his new development studio, Clovers, which is currently working on Okami 2, includes several former PlatinumGames alumni. This suggests a potential talent pool that could contribute to a Scalebound revival.
Kamiya emphasized his seriousness about the project, stating, "I am being 100% serious when I say that" he strongly desires to see Scalebound released. He acknowledged that his current studio, Clovers, may not be in a position to undertake such a project immediately due to its current commitments. However, he remains optimistic about the future, drawing a parallel to Okami's eventual return.
"I strongly believe that if you want something strongly enough, you eventually find a way to make it happen," Kamiya explained. "That's the case with Okami right now, where even after all these years, the opportunity once again presented itself, and I hope that will be the case with Scalebound in the future as well."
Scalebound was initially announced in 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive and spent approximately four years in development before Microsoft officially canceled it in 2017. Previous statements from PlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba indicated shared responsibility between the developer and publisher for the project's cancellation. The glimpses of Scalebound shown before its demise featured a protagonist wielding a sword alongside a massive dragon companion, capable of wreaking havoc on enemies and battlefields.
