Hideo Kojima Aims to Keep Upcoming Horror Game OD a Profound Mystery

Hideo Kojima, known for his signature enigmatic game announcements, plans to maintain an unusual level of secrecy surrounding his forthcoming horror title, OD. In a recent episode of his radio show Koji10, Kojima expressed his intention to withhold extensive marketing materials, opting instead for a hands-off approach that prioritizes surprising players upon release.

"It's still a mystery. That doesn't mean we haven't made the game," Kojima stated. "I want to keep quiet and release it. That's unusual for me, isn't it? I normally put out teaser after teaser. This time I don't want to reveal much. A mystery. It's so new that it's a mystery."

Kojima elaborated that OD aims to explore the "limits of fear," a concept he believes is central to the game's identity and title. The game was first revealed in 2023, with its premise centered on the idea of an "overdose on fear." This marketing strategy contrasts with Kojima's previous project, Death Stranding, which featured numerous teaser trailers and extended gameplay previews designed to pique curiosity.

Kojima acknowledged the experimental nature of OD, admitting he is uncertain if the game will resonate with a wide audience due to gameplay systems that diverge significantly from his past work. Development on OD is supported by Xbox, and the project is reportedly insulated from the recent workforce reductions and project cancellations affecting Microsoft's gaming division.

The title features performances from actors Hunter Schafer and Sophia Lillis. While the late Udo Kier appeared in the game's initial teaser, his full role remains unclear following his passing last year. Kojima had previously indicated that filming for OD was postponed to 2026 due to the 2025 SAG-AFTRA strike, though Kier's contributions from earlier stages may still be included.

Alongside OD, Kojima is also working on Physint, which he has described as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid.
