Hideo Kojima Details Sony's Decision to Cancel Physint and Subsequent Xbox Partnership

Hideo Kojima has detailed the unexpected turn of events that led to PlayStation cancelling its funding for his upcoming action-espionage game, Physint, and how he subsequently secured a publishing deal with Xbox. In an exclusive interview, Kojima revealed that Sony informed him of the decision during a Zoom call in June, catching him completely by surprise.

Kojima Productions, operating as an independent studio, relies on securing project-based contracts for its survival. At the time of the meeting, the studio had two active projects: the Xbox-published OD and the PlayStation-bound Physint. The abrupt withdrawal of funding for Physint put the future of Kojima Productions into jeopardy, with Kojima expressing concerns about having to lay off staff, potential issues with the bank that had provided loans, and the implications for actors already scanned for the project.

"I was shocked and I said, 'What did you say?' I couldn’t quite process what they had said," Kojima stated, recalling the moment SIE informed him of the cancellation. He acknowledged the difficult climate within the game industry, with many studios facing closure and titles being canceled, but believed Physint was secure. The lack of a clear reason for the cancellation from Sony left him and his team bewildered.

Despite the shock, Kojima's immediate priority was his staff, numbering around 200 individuals, many of whom had joined from larger corporations. He also felt a personal responsibility to continue the project, which he saw as a culmination of his 40-year career in game development and the 10th anniversary of his studio. The potential collapse of Kojima Productions would have been a significant setback for the trend of independent creators pursuing their own projects.

Following the meeting, Kojima and his core team worked quickly to devise a new strategy. Rather than simply seeking funding, Kojima decided to pitch Physint as a new intellectual property (IP) that would encompass not only a game but also potential adaptations in movies, dramas, anime, TV, and music. This broader approach garnered positive reactions from various industries.

Kojima then approached Xbox, with whom Kojima Productions was already collaborating on the game OD. Xbox's reception to the Physint pitch was overwhelmingly positive. "This pitch was fantastic. Never seen a pitch like this!" was the reported reaction, leading to a new publishing agreement. Xbox's commitment to supporting IP expansion across various media aligned with Kojima's vision.

Internally, Kojima initially kept the news from his staff, only informing the Physint team leaders a few days after the Sony meeting. He braced for potential departures, but was encouraged when the team remained motivated and actively contributed to refining the Physint pitch. The entire studio was later informed before the official announcement, and the news was met with calm acceptance and relief that the project would continue.

Kojima confirmed that work on Physint did not stop. He continues to be involved in the conceptualization, world-building, scenario, visuals, and design. While the animation team is primarily focused on OD, experimentation with game systems, including AI, is ongoing. Kojima also mentioned that the choice of game engine is still under consideration, but he is eager to leverage Xbox's advanced technological resources.

Regarding the possibility of Physint releasing on PlayStation platforms, Kojima stated he did not have a definitive answer and that it would be a question for Xbox. He noted Xbox's general approach of delivering games to as many players as possible, regardless of platform.

Kojima Productions released an official statement addressing recent reports that speculated on the reasons for the change in publishing partners. The statement emphasized that the studio is financially healthy and profitable, that Physint development continues with Xbox, and that the relationship with PlayStation remains strong, dismissing the speculative claims as unsubstantiated.

Kojima also touched upon his long-standing relationship with Sony, expressing no ill will despite the circumstances. He mentioned that he had met with former SIE CEO Jim Ryan before his retirement, during which a mutual agreement was reached to create a new action espionage game, making the subsequent cancellation even more surprising.

Looking ahead, Kojima is determined to complete Physint and is even considering a shortened timeline for potential movie adaptations, similar to the approach taken with Death Stranding. He aims to expand the Physint IP, with the game release serving as the primary focus.
