Hideo Kojima recently posted images on social media depicting his visit to Sony's offices in Japan, notable for his attire: a T-shirt featuring the band Joy Division. This choice of clothing has drawn significant attention and comparisons from fans, particularly referencing Johnny Silverhand and the Arasaka Tower from Cyberpunk 2077.
Kojima shared the photos from his visit to Sony City, the company's corporate headquarters in Tokyo. The context surrounding this visit is significant given recent developments concerning Kojima's upcoming game, Physint. Earlier this year, Sony dropped Physint, a project often described as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear, leading Kojima to seek new publishing partners. In an interview, Kojima revealed his concerns for Kojima Productions' future following Sony's decision, which was communicated via a Zoom call.
Physint has since found a new home with Microsoft, with the company also securing adaptation rights for film and TV. Reports from Bloomberg indicated that Sony's decision was influenced by concerns over the performance of Kojima's previous title, Death Stranding, as well as Physint's development timeline, budget, and platform strategy. Kojima Productions issued a statement asserting the studio's healthy financial state and continued development of Physint with Xbox, while also stating their relationship with PlayStation remained strong.
Despite the circumstances, Kojima has expressed no ill will toward Sony, emphasizing his long-standing relationship with the company spanning approximately 30 years. He acknowledged the challenging times in the game industry and shared his initial shock and concern for his studio's survival upon hearing of the Physint cancellation. Kojima mentioned that Sony did not provide a specific reason for the decision and had not been in contact since. He also noted that he would have preferred to receive the news of the cancellation earlier.
Fans have interpreted Kojima's visit to Sony, particularly his Joy Division T-shirt, in various ways. The online discourse has included humorous comparisons to Cyberpunk 2077, specifically Johnny Silverhand's destructive actions at Arasaka Tower. This has led to speculation about potential future collaborations between Kojima and Sony, or perhaps a deeper connection to the Death Stranding universe, though the exact nature of the visit remains unconfirmed.
Discussions surrounding Physint have also touched upon its budget. Reports suggested that Xbox may have secured the deal for a lower amount than typically expected for a major new title from a renowned creator. Kojima himself stated that Microsoft's vision extends beyond just funding a game, focusing on the development of a new intellectual property that encompasses film and anime, indicating a larger-scale ambition.
Physint does not yet have a confirmed release window. It is anticipated to launch after Kojima's other upcoming game, OD, which is also being developed for Xbox.
