The unique first-person shooter High on Life is slated for a virtual reality release in 2027, according to an announcement at the VR Games Showcase. Developed originally by Squanch Games, the VR adaptation will be handled by Flat2VR Studios and is set to launch for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR headsets.
Flat2VR Studios is undertaking a comprehensive rebuild of the game to leverage virtual reality technology. This will enable players to engage with the game's signature talking alien guns through new, manual VR interactions. The developer has emphasized that these mechanics are being designed to integrate seamlessly with the core gameplay, preserving the fast-paced and fluid combat that characterized the original release. Early glimpses suggest interactions such as feeding weapons and stroking them, with the guns expected to offer commentary on these actions.
High on Life was initially released in 2022, placing players in the role of a bounty hunter tasked with defending Earth from an alien cartel that intended to exploit humanity. The game distinguished itself with its peculiar sense of humor, engaging combat, and memorable characters, including a particularly aggressive knife with Australian origins.
A sequel to High on Life was released earlier this year, but it garnered less favorable reviews, partly due to significant technical issues present at launch. In related VR development news, Flat2VR Studios is also reportedly working on a VR port of System Shock, which is expected to be based on the 2023 remake of the original 1994 game.
