A sequel to the popular open-world RPG Hogwarts Legacy is officially in development, Warner Bros. Interactive confirmed in its latest financial earnings report. The company referred to the project as the "second installment" of the Hogwarts Legacy series, though no official title has been revealed. Avalanche Software, the developer behind the original game, is expected to lead the development of the new title.
Hogwarts Legacy achieved significant commercial success, becoming the best-selling game of 2023 and surpassing major releases like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. The first game, set in the 1890s, allowed players to create a custom Hogwarts student and explore a conspiracy within the wizarding world while attending classes and learning spells. It was also the top-trending game search on Google for 2023.
The game's success, however, occurred amidst controversy surrounding statements and actions by Harry Potter series author J.K. Rowling. Reports from GLAAD and Advocate detailed Rowling's history of expressing anti-trans sentiments, supporting anti-trans groups, and advocating for legislation perceived as harmful to the transgender community. While Warner Bros. Interactive stated Rowling was not directly involved in the creation of Hogwarts Legacy, she financially benefited from the franchise's success. The extent of her potential involvement in the sequel remains to be seen.
Hogwarts Legacy was initially released in February 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with subsequent releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch later that year. A Nintendo Switch 2 version also launched recently.
