Mouthwashing, the first-person horror adventure game developed by Wrong Organ, has now launched on consoles and is available on Xbox Game Pass. The game, which garnered praise for its atmospheric dread and non-linear storytelling upon its PC release, places players aboard the Tulpar, a commercial space freighter experiencing a catastrophic event.
Mouthwashing eschews jump scares in favor of a masterfully crafted sense of unease. It utilizes claustrophobic environments, effective audio design, disorienting pacing, and a lo-fi visual style to create a psychological horror experience. As the game progresses, the ship's corridors become increasingly constricted due to the crew's desperate repairs, mirroring the deteriorating mental states of its characters.
The narrative unfolds in a non-chronological manner, employing a datamoshing effect for transitions that can make it difficult to discern when or even who the player is embodying. This structure trusts the player to piece together the story. The game is noted for its attention to detail, with subtle character portrayals and evolving dynamics that become clearer on subsequent playthroughs. One notable aspect is the portrayal of a particularly detestable character, whose narcissistic descent into delusion is described as chilling.
The horror in Mouthwashing stems from the psychological disintegration of the crew and the sparse, unglorified violence that results. Players often find themselves active participants in these grim events. The game culminates in a moving monologue that serves as a final message to both a crew member and the player, touching on themes of responsibility and redemption.
Mouthwashing is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. It is also included with Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. Additionally, the game is currently offered at a 40 percent discount on Steam.
