Horror Hit 'Obsession' Is Returning to Theaters for a Special 4DX Engagement

Curry Barker's acclaimed horror film Obsession is set to return to cinemas for a special one-day engagement on October 14, offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience the movie in 4DX. The announcement was made via an Instagram post highlighting the "immersive" nature of this rerelease.

Regal Cinemas is hosting the event, and tickets are currently available for purchase. This marks a return to theaters for a film that has already enjoyed a remarkably successful cinematic run.

Understanding 4DX

For those unfamiliar, 4DX is a multi-sensory film format that enhances the viewing experience with motion-synchronized seats, as well as environmental effects such as wind, fog, strobe lights, scents, and water sprays. While the format is often associated with action-heavy blockbusters like Godzilla Minus Zero or Avengers: Doomsday, Obsession's inclusion suggests an attempt to leverage subtler effects like lighting and fog to amplify the film's inherent tension.

A Box Office Phenomenon

Obsession has proven to be a significant financial success, grossing $520 million worldwide against a budget under $1 million. Its profitability has positioned it as one of the most successful films ever made in terms of return on investment. The film resonated particularly with Gen Z audiences and achieved a rare feat by earning more in its second weekend than its opening weekend, a testament to strong word-of-mouth.

Director Curry Barker has a busy slate ahead, with a horror-comedy titled Anything but Ghosts scheduled for 2027. He is also attached to write and direct a reboot of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for A24 and is developing an original horror project for Universal Pictures.

This year has seen a notable resurgence in box office performance, with both low-budget successes like Backrooms and major blockbusters such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which became the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. The film industry is projected to achieve its first $10 billion year since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
