The sandbox game Hytale is preparing to launch its significant Chapter 1 update on October 12, 2026, introducing a host of new features including handcrafted dungeons, world events, and a revamped ability system. After Riot Games canceled the game in June 2025, its original developer, Hypixel Studios, reacquired the rights and released Hytale into Early Access in January. The game has reportedly surpassed the studio's expectations, with lead designer Simon Collins-Laflamme previously stating he anticipated over one million players on launch day.
Hytale's upcoming Chapter 1 update focuses heavily on handcrafted encounters and the introduction of goblins. The trailer showcases the game's first such dungeon: an underground goblin cavern. Players who reach the end will face a multi-phase boss battle against a flamethrower-wielding mecha goblin. This encounter is powered by the new Encounter Manager, a tool designed to allow both developers and players to create custom encounters and boss fights. This system is a key part of Hytale's robust modding capabilities, which have already enabled players to create extensive custom content, including a mod that transforms the game into a Pokémon-like experience.
Beyond the dungeon, Chapter 1 will feature Goblin Breaches, temporary world events that open portals to distant biomes, offering opportunities for loot. The update also brings new goblin gadgets, such as rocket boots, gliders, drills, and a hookshot. A significant addition is the new rune and ability system, intended to offer RPG-style depth without compromising the sandbox freedom. Players can equip an ability rune and then enhance it with two modifier runes. For example, a fireball ability can be modified to add a shock effect and split into multiple projectiles. Hypixel Studios aims for this system to support diverse playstyles rather than enforcing a single optimal build or rigid class structure.
Despite its visual similarities to Minecraft, Hytale appears to be differentiating itself through its emphasis on creator tools and its in-depth RPG mechanics. The game's apparent success suggests this approach is resonating with its player base.
