Indie Developer Defends Wife's Voice Acting After Player Claims AI Use

A recent Steam review for the indie action-RPG Luminary sparked a debate about the use of artificial intelligence in game development. A player, who had logged less than an hour of playtime, claimed that the game's voice acting was "awful AI-generated" and "killed it" for them, citing it as a reason for the game feeling "off."

Refractive Entertainment, the two-person studio behind Luminary, responded to the review by clarifying that the voice actor was, in fact, the creative director Keith Kolod's wife, Mikell, performing her first-ever voice acting role. Kolod stated that the game does not use AI and that they are simply "indie game devs doing our thing with the resources we have."

Kolod later shared the review on X, formerly Twitter, expressing bewilderment at the automatic assumption of AI use in indie games when voices do not meet AAA production standards. He thanked players who complimented his wife's performance as the Temple Guardian, a calming, ethereal goddess character.

In private communications, Kolod explained his stance on AI, stating he has no inherent issue with its use in game development. However, he chooses not to employ it for voiceovers as he views them as a way to "leave parts of me, my family, and friends" within his creations. He described convincing Mikell to voice the character, noting her initial shyness and nervousness. She eventually agreed, despite her concerns about her performance, after being reassured that the role required a calm, centuries-old presence and minimal intense acting.

Kolod revealed that his primary motivation for developing Luminary was to create a game that he, his wife, and his son could enjoy together. Inspired by titles like Elden Ring, he aimed to make an action-RPG that was accessible to newer players, contrasting with the often punishing difficulty of Souls-like games. Luminary, which launched into Steam Early Access on August 11, features a resource-gathering, action-adventure sandbox with a visual style described as a blend of Fable and Immortals Fenyx Rising. The game has garnered a "Mostly Positive" rating on Steam from nearly 350 reviews.

Operating without funding or a publisher, Luminary has carried significant expectations for the small studio. Despite the controversy, the game has seen commercial success. In its first week after launching on Steam Early Access, Luminary generated over $100,000 in sales, with the studio retaining approximately $70,000 after Steam's platform fees. Kolod noted that the attention surrounding the AI voice accusation has also increased the game's visibility on platforms like Reddit, leading to more wishlists, though not yet a proportional increase in sales.

Mikell Kolod's contribution to the game was an act of support for her husband's project. She reportedly expressed a desire not to hear negative feedback on her voice performance prior to the game's release. Kolod shared that her involvement was driven by love and a wish to see him succeed with Luminary, acknowledging that convincing her to do voice work again might be challenging due to her apprehension about hearing her own recorded voice.
