Infinity Ward is positioning the DMZ mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as a central pillar for the franchise, aiming to establish it as the definitive extraction shooter experience within the series. According to details shared in a recent blog post and developer diary, the studio is building upon the foundations of the 2022 DMZ beta.
DMZ is described by Infinity Ward as an "action extraction shooter," a designation that emphasizes its focus on combat and player engagement over the menu navigation and looting often associated with other titles in the genre. While these elements are present, the user interface has been designed for speed and clarity, featuring clear icons and a streamlined flow.
The mode includes its own progression system, independent of the main game, with 70 levels to achieve solely through playing DMZ. It also features a separate in-game economy comprising cash and crafting materials that carry over between matches, effectively functioning as a "game within a game." However, certain progression elements, such as weapon unlocks, are shared with Modern Warfare 4's multiplayer and battle royale modes.
The DMZ map, named Haijin, hosts the largest concentration of enemy AI that Infinity Ward has developed to date. Similar to the previous beta, players are encouraged to undertake missions and side operations to earn experience points, explore the map, and engage with various enemies, including other players. A new addition for Modern Warfare 4 is the deployment screen, which allows players to select mission types before entering a match, offering a more structured start. Alternatively, players can opt to enter without a predefined objective, allowing them to discover missions organically.
Enhanced AI and Difficulty
Infinity Ward has increased the intensity of AI enemies and introduced a wider range of difficulty tiers to create a more dynamic distribution of threats across the map. Enemies are now categorized into four tiers of aggression and power. The most formidable adversaries, known as Commanders, are protected by groups of challenging enemies that must be overcome before confronting the Commander directly.
The Forward Operating Base (FOB)
Meta-progression has been significantly expanded compared to the 2022 DMZ beta, centered around a player hub called the Forward Operating Base (FOB). This explorable space can be visited solo or with party members and serves a similar function to the Hideout in games like Escape from Tarkov, housing several interactive stations for post-match activities.
At the FOB, players can manage active operators, access their item stash, create loadouts, customize weapons, practice at a firing range, accept "Orders" (in-game missions), and open loot packs. A 3D printer is also available at the FOB, utilizing ingredients gathered in-game to craft useful items. The base also includes a vendor for purchasing weapons and items with in-game cash, a display case for collected dog tags, a bounty leaderboard for top PvP players, and a boss board providing intelligence on powerful AI enemies.
DMZ will be available at the launch of Modern Warfare 4 on October 23rd for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Earlier announcements for Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone include a skin toggle feature for Warzone and a change to double XP tokens, which will now count down during matches rather than in real-time.
