Infinity Ward has provided an in-depth look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's DMZ mode, an extraction shooter experience returning with significant enhancements.
DMZ, first introduced in Modern Warfare II, is set to be a central feature of Modern Warfare 4. The mode will feature its own 70-level progression system, offering substantial rewards and incorporating world-building elements and lore. Players will have access to a forward operating base between matches, where they can utilize a firing range to test loadouts, craft items using collected loot, gather intelligence, and track various missions, bosses, and unique challenges.
Infinity Ward co-studio head Jack O'Hara acknowledged player feedback regarding the stakes in the initial DMZ iteration. For Modern Warfare 4's DMZ, the developer is increasing the consequence of failure. The mode centers on a customizable operator who can be permanently lost if they die, requiring a cost to revive. Lootable items can also be permanently lost upon player death or if dropped. These items can be used in a 3D printer to craft resources such as armor plates, consumables, gear, and potentially killstreaks or AI fire support.
Described as an "action extraction shooter," DMZ aims to maintain a constant sense of danger through AI combatants, bosses, and other players. Infinity Ward has outlined various enemy types, including drones, helicopters, vehicles, and tanks, alongside more formidable adversaries. The game's blog post also details that different map areas will have varying threat levels, which can escalate based on player actions. Actions that generate noise will attract more enemy attention, while stealthy approaches using silenced weapons and cautious play can help avoid intense confrontations. Exploration is also key to uncovering loot and secrets.
Infinity Ward has committed to extensive post-launch support for DMZ, including map updates, dynamic weather systems that will vary seasonally, and other content. The developer hopes the mode will resonate with players and be sustained in future iterations.
DMZ will be available at launch for Modern Warfare 4 on October 23. Unlike its predecessor's iteration, it will not be a free-to-play component.
