Fighting game enthusiasts are once again anticipating a new entry in the Injustice series following a recent playtester job posting. The posting, which seeks participants for a four-hour playtest of an "unreleased AAA 2D fighting game," has fueled speculation that NetherRealm Studios is preparing to announce a sequel to its DC Comics-themed fighting game franchise.
Good Gamer Group, a company that organizes playtests for upcoming titles, is seeking "top-ranked 2D fighting game players" for an in-person session in Culver City, California. Participants must have achieved a rank in the top 25% of a major 2D fighting game. While seemingly vague, the description, combined with the location and the nature of the game, points towards an unannounced project.
Why the Injustice 3 Speculation?
The emphasis on a "AAA 2D fighting game" excludes several announced but unreleased titles. For instance, Virtua Fighter: Crossroads and Dead or Alive 7 are 3D fighters, while Melty Blood Type Twi-Lumina does not fit the AAA descriptor. This narrows the field considerably to unannounced games. The playtest's location in California suggests development within the United States, further limiting possibilities to studios like NetherRealm, known for Mortal Kombat and the previous Injustice titles.
The timing also aligns with NetherRealm's typical release cadence. Their most recent game, Mortal Kombat 1, launched in 2023. Following a four-year gap between Mortal Kombat 11 and MK1, a potential 2027 release for Injustice 3 would be consistent with this pattern. Previous rumors have surfaced, including comments from voice actors who hinted at the game's existence before retracting their statements. NetherRealm's creative director, Ed Boon, has also recently shared clips from the Injustice series on social media, a notable action given the last installment was released in 2017. The announcement of the mobile game DCKO earlier this year, initially mistaken by some for a new Injustice title, has also heightened anticipation for a proper console sequel.
