Insomniac Games has stepped in to clarify a point of confusion among fans regarding the character lineup in the recently released launch trailer for Marvel's Wolverine. Following the trailer's debut, a significant number of viewers mistook the villain wielding a distinctive purple energy sword for the mutant character Psylocke.
Speculation and discussion quickly surfaced across social media platforms, with many fans identifying the character's energy sword as a clear indicator of Psylocke's presence. Psylocke, a well-known mutant character in the X-Men universe, often utilizes psionic energy, which can manifest as blades or other constructs. The visual similarity of the energy sword in the trailer led many to believe this was an intentional reveal of Psylocke in the game.
However, Insomniac Games took to X (formerly Twitter) to set the record straight. A post from the official Insomniac Games account explicitly labeled the character as Lady Deathstrike, accompanied by a short clip of the villain. This confirmation has prompted a mixed reaction, with some players expressing surprise that such clarification was deemed necessary.
The primary source of the fan confusion appears to be the energy sword. While the version of Lady Deathstrike featured in Marvel's Wolverine deviates from her most common comic book appearances, her attire and overall design elements are more closely aligned with the established look of Lady Deathstrike. Furthermore, Insomniac has previously confirmed Lady Deathstrike's inclusion in the game and has shown her in earlier promotional material, including a July trailer and a social media GIF, where she is depicted using her signature finger claws.
These previous showings, along with the trailer itself, have emphasized her combat style utilizing her claws, not psionic energy constructs. While the origin or purpose of the purple sword remains a mystery within the game's narrative, Insomniac has affirmed that it does not signify the presence of Psylocke.
The game is confirmed to feature other prominent X-Men characters such as Jean Grey and Sabretooth. The status of Psylocke's inclusion in Marvel's Wolverine has not been addressed by Insomniac beyond this clarification. Marvel's Wolverine is slated to launch for the PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. The launch trailer was part of a recent State of Play presentation by Sony.
