Insomniac Games is preparing to release Marvel's Wolverine, but the studio is already actively working on addressing significant player feedback. This comes in the wake of a largely negative critical response leading up to the game's launch.

James Stevenson, Insomniac's director of communications and marketing, stated on X that the development team has been paying close attention to player reactions over the past few days and is working on improvements. He alluded to specific issues, humorously noting that the team has been "cooking hard today in response to some of the feedback" and wondering "what that smell out of our kitchen was." This statement strongly suggests that Insomniac plans to tackle the controversial scent trails, which have become a prominent point of discussion.

The Scent Trail Controversy

In Marvel's Wolverine, players encounter colorful scent trails that guide them toward interactive objects or indicate the correct path through levels. While the game was designed as a more linear experience compared to Insomniac's open-world Spider-Man titles, many reviews criticized these trails for creating a feeling of constant guidance, akin to playing with virtual guardrails. These scent paths have emerged as a focal point for player criticism, even among those who have not yet played the game.

While Stevenson's confirmation of planned updates is positive, it remains to be seen if these patches can resolve the fundamental issues identified in reviews. The game's combat has been described as serviceable, but critics have noted it is "completely at odds with the story Insomniac struggles to tell." Concerns have been raised that the necessity of constant fun and violence in gameplay undermines the intended emotional weight of the narrative, making it difficult to believe Logan is holding back when the player is never frictionally challenged to do the same.

Marvel's Wolverine is now available exclusively on PlayStation 5.
