Following the release of Insomniac's Marvel's Wolverine, the developer has dropped hints that it may address player criticisms regarding the game's guiding "scent trails." The game, which launched five days after reviews became available, has faced scrutiny for mechanics perceived as overly linear and dated, with particular concern raised about how the game directs players through Logan's sniff-based abilities.
These trails manifest as prominent blue particles, clearly indicating the path to objectives and removing any sense of player-driven exploration. This mechanic sparked debate among reviewers, with many concluding it was an unswitchable accessibility feature. The visual representation of these trails has been likened to "fart gas" or "stink lines," drawing comparisons to character Pepé Le Pew and fueling fears that the game might be oversimplified, distinguishing it significantly from Insomniac's previous Spider-Man titles.
In response to the feedback, James Stevenson, Insomniac's director of marketing, posted on X, stating, "We have been 100% listening over the last few days and the team has been cooking hard today in response to some of the feedback." He followed this with a winky face emoji and the playful remark, "in case you were wondering what that smell out of our kitchen was."
While not explicitly mentioning the scent trails, Stevenson's comment strongly suggests that Insomniac is aware of the criticisms and is actively working on patches. This implies that some of the concerns raised across numerous reviews may be addressed soon after the game's launch, potentially improving the player experience.
