A new initiative on Itch.io, spearheaded by Necrosoft Games and the United Videogame Workers-CWA union, aims to provide financial relief to game developers who have lost their jobs. The Game Industry Hardship Fund bundle, launched on July 30, offers a collection of over 100 games with all proceeds, after processing fees, directed to the UVW-CWA's worker hardship fund. This fund provides direct financial assistance to laid-off developers in the U.S. and Canada.

As of its publication, the bundle had already surpassed $20,000 in donations. It operates on a pay-what-you-want model with a minimum contribution of $10. The collection includes DRM-free PC versions of notable titles such as A Short Hike, SkateBIRD, and Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure. Developers who have experienced layoffs since January 2024 are eligible to apply for assistance through a provided link. Eligibility is restricted to laid-off developers, contractors, or freelancers in the U.S. or Canada, though UVW-CWA membership is not a requirement.

The ongoing labor crisis in the video game industry has seen widespread layoffs affecting studios of all sizes, regardless of their success. A report from the 2026 GDC State of the Game Industry indicated that over a quarter of developers have faced layoffs in the past two years, a figure rising to approximately one-third in the U.S. These events have a significant human impact, affecting individuals' livelihoods even when their work has been critically and commercially successful. This bundle and its associated fund represent a community effort to support those affected, underscoring the importance of mutual aid and unionization in the industry.

The Game Industry Hardship Fund bundle is available for purchase until August 13.
