Before the ubiquity of modern streaming services, The CW carved out a niche by blending traditional teen drama and romance with genre elements like superheroes, vampires, and zombies. While shows like The Vampire Diaries and The 100 garnered significant attention, one of its most creative series, iZombie, remained a hidden gem for many. Now, the entire five-season run of iZombie is available to stream for free on YouTube, offering a perfect opportunity to discover or revisit this distinctive show.
Premiering in 2015, iZombie stars Rose McIver as Liv Moore, a Seattle-based medical resident whose life takes a dramatic turn when she becomes a zombie. After a party is interrupted by a zombie horde, Liv awakens with pale skin, white hair, and an insatiable craving for human brains. This transformation forces her to isolate herself from friends and family, end her engagement, and change careers. She begins working at the morgue, providing a discreet source for the brains she needs.
This premise sets the stage for the show's unique procedural structure. When Liv consumes the brains of the deceased, she temporarily gains access to their memories and talents, effectively becoming a medium. This ability aids her in solving crimes, often alongside her skeptical partner, Detective Clive Babineaux. The series, developed by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, shares a similar tone and wit with Thomas's earlier cult hit, Veronica Mars, blending a lighthearted, quippy dialogue with dark humor.
McIver delivers a compelling performance, balancing Liv's struggle with her undead nature with a charming demeanor. She is supported by a strong cast, including Rahul Kohli as Ravi, Liv's zombie-allied boss who seeks a cure, and Malcolm Goodwin as Clive, whose persistent questioning of Liv's uncanny insights is a running gag. The series cleverly uses the brain-eating mechanic to explore different personalities and skills each week, leading to humorous and often inconvenient situations for Liv.
As iZombie progressed through its seasons, the narrative expanded beyond its procedural roots. What began as a story about a zombie solving crimes evolved into a larger conspiracy exploring zombie mythology, societal impact, and the consequences of an outbreak. Creator Rob Thomas envisioned this arc from the beginning, aiming to incorporate substantial zombie-centric storylines akin to the overarching mystery in Veronica Mars.
Despite the increasingly complex plots, iZombie maintained its core identity, characterized by its blend of romantic comedy elements and its signature quirkiness. Memorable sequences often depicted Liv preparing brains with various culinary enhancements, creating a darkly humorous and visually striking element akin to a toned-down version of Hannibal. The show demonstrated that the zombie concept, often relegated to background threats or monstrous figures, could be reshaped into a compelling lead character and a fresh narrative device. With its availability on YouTube, iZombie offers viewers a chance to experience a truly original take on the undead.
