YouTuber Jacksepticeye, also known as Seán McLoughlin, has spoken about the critical reception to his role as a producer on the upcoming animated Bloodborne movie. He indicated that approximately 80% of the initial reactions to his involvement were critical.
McLoughlin, a self-proclaimed admirer of FromSoftware's action-RPG, shared his perspective in a recent interview, stating that he understands the skepticism. "I would be the same if someone took my beloved IP, that's my favorite, and then some YouTuber's attached to it. It would just make you scratch your head a little bit," he explained.
Sony first announced plans for an R-rated animated Bloodborne movie at CinemaCon 2026, with McLoughlin joining PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation as a producer. At the time, he described the opportunity as a "dream come true" and "the honor of my life."
Despite the initial backlash, McLoughlin emphasized his commitment to the project. "I will fight tooth and nail to make this thing the best it possibly can be," he assured.
Regarding the film's narrative approach, McLoughlin clarified that the movie will not retell the story of the original game. Instead, he aims to honor the existing universe and craft a compelling new story within it. "I'm not trying to be the game. I'm not trying to one-up the game, and I'm not trying to compete with it, or tell the same story," he stated.
McLoughlin also confirmed he has significant influence over the production and direction of the film, acting as a "vibe-checker" to ensure that collaborators understand and respect the Bloodborne IP. He indicated that he has a say in hiring and the overall creative process, ensuring that only those familiar with Bloodborne are brought onto the project.
A release date for the Bloodborne movie has not yet been announced.
