Jagex Announces Fourth RuneScape MMO in Development, Alongside Animated Series

Jagex has revealed plans for a fourth massively multiplayer online (MMO) game within the RuneScape franchise. The developer also announced an animated adaptation of the long-running series.

At RuneFest in Birmingham, England, Jagex provided an early look at the new MMO, which is described as being developed "for a new generation of players." While still in the initial stages of development with no release expected for several years, the game is currently referred to by the working title "RS4." It aims to bring the world of Gielinor to life using Unreal Engine, combining established RuneScape elements like depth, freedom, and community involvement with modern technology and game design.

Jagex currently manages RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and the spinoff RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The developer stated that RS4 is not intended to replace any of these existing titles. Instead, it will be designed to complement them as an additional way to experience the RuneScape universe. Jagex views the different RuneScape experiences as mutually beneficial, potentially attracting new players or encouraging existing ones to engage with multiple games in the franchise.

The new MMO will be set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age, beginning in Ashenfall, an area previously explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The narrative will take place years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, with Ashenfall having evolved over time. Jagex has expressed an ambition for the game's adventures to expand beyond Ashenfall, exploring familiar and new locations across Gielinor.

In addition to the new game, Jagex announced a partnership with YouTuber Charlie White, also known as MoistCr1TiKaL, and the production company Lyrical Media. This collaboration will focus on creating a new animated adaptation set in the world of Gielinor, aiming to bring its characters and stories to life.
