Jagex Pulls RuneScape 3 Trailer Amid Generative AI Concerns

Jagex, the developer behind the long-running MMORPG RuneScape, has removed a recently released trailer for RuneScape 3's "Dragon Slayer 2" questline. The decision follows widespread fan accusations that the trailer utilized generative artificial intelligence, with players pointing to visual glitches such as a character with six fingers and an anachronistic depiction of modern footwear.

In a statement on Reddit, Jagex social media manager Alex Sween confirmed the trailer's removal and stated the company would "investigate urgently." Sween explained that the trailer was created by an external partner who had explicitly assured Jagex that no generative AI would be used in its production. "Among other things, there’s a sixth finger and, well, that’s pretty hard to explain away," Sween acknowledged. "For that we apologize."

Jagex reiterated its official stance against the use of generative AI, with Sween stating, "Our position is clear at Jagex: we don’t use GenAI to create our games, artwork or creative assets, and will not knowingly allow it to be used on our behalf." This incident marks the second time in quick succession that Jagex has faced scrutiny over generative AI use by trusted partners.

Just days prior, Jagex and 100 Thieves issued apologies for generative AI appearing in a collaborative Old School RuneScape T-shirt design. "We’re as angry as you are about this," Sween wrote regarding the T-shirt incident. "We wouldn’t have approved the use of AI in any designs. We don’t use generative AI to replace the artists and developers who make our games, we don’t use it in our marketing materials, and we won’t use it in our merchandising or allow its use in partnerships."

The dual incidents initially angered the RuneScape community, particularly given Jagex's previous assertions about its AI policies. However, the studio's latest statement has garnered some sympathy from players who feel Jagex was misled by its partners. "Great response overall here man," one Reddit user commented. "Got dealt a shit hand and youre handling it. I can totally relate to having people use AI against policy in work submissions – work in a vastly different field but it happens."

Others remain critical, questioning Jagex's oversight. "You literally didn’t even watch the trailer before it was posted," another user remarked. "Even if an external partner made it, how do you explain that?"

Jagex has announced plans to overhaul its review processes immediately following RuneFest and intends to collaborate with community creators to produce new assets for the "Dragon Slayer II" update. Meanwhile, other announcements from RuneFest, including the reveal of a fourth RuneScape MMO in development, were met with a more positive reception from attendees and the wider community.
