IO Interactive has announced that its action-stealth game, James Bond 007 First Light, has sold 4 million copies since its release in May. This critical and financial success makes a sequel a strong probability, despite no official announcements.
The future of James Bond video games has seen some uncertainty following comments from Amazon Game Studios boss Jeff Gatis. While initial remarks suggested IO Interactive might not continue with Bond games, Gatis later clarified that Amazon Game Studios would likely want the developer to create a sequel, acknowledging the success of the current title.
007 First Light marks a significant return for Bond in gaming, with developer IO Interactive applying its expertise in environmental sandboxes and stealth action. The game features expansive levels designed for exploration and introduces mechanics such as a bluffing system to enhance player immersion. It draws inspiration from cinematic blockbuster games like Uncharted, incorporating impressive set pieces. The game also offers a unique take on the characters as an origin story, with Patrick Gibson delivering a notable performance as Bond.
In addition to potential future installments, IO Interactive is continuing support for 007 First Light. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is currently in development, though a release window has not yet been provided. The developer has also committed to a year of post-launch content, including New Game Plus, additional Tac Sim challenges, and a new mission featuring the pirate lord Bawma.
