The search for the next actor to embody James Bond, the iconic British superspy, has reportedly narrowed to a shortlist of six individuals. Following Daniel Craig's departure from the role after 2021's "No Time to Die," the franchise is entering a new era, with "Bond 26" set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve.
According to a report from Page Six, screen tests for the coveted role are expected to commence in early September. The reported list includes one actor with less widespread recognition alongside five more established names in the industry. Casting director Nina Gold is overseeing the selection process for Amazon.
Emerging Talent
Jack Barton is cited as a surprise frontrunner. Barton's credits include Netflix's "Heartstopper" and Steven Knight's "SAS: Rogue Heroes," where he portrayed SAS soldier John Tonkin. He also had a minor role in "Poor Things." His relative anonymity aligns with the sentiments of longtime casting director Debbie McWilliams, who has previously stated that the role of 007 should ideally be filled by an actor unfamiliar to audiences to maintain the character's enigmatic persona.
Established Contenders
Among the more recognized actors reportedly in contention is Jack Lowden, currently starring in Apple TV Plus' spy thriller "Slow Horses." Another contender is Callum Turner, who recently appeared in the World War II miniseries "Masters of the Air" and is slated to portray John Lennon in an upcoming series of Beatles films.
Jacob Elordi, a frequent subject of speculation for the Bond role, has expanded his dramatic portfolio with roles in "Euphoria," "Priscilla," and "Frankenstein." He is also set to star as Heathcliff in an upcoming adaptation of "Wuthering Heights."
Paul Mescal, known for his emotionally charged performances in "Normal People" and his Academy Award-nominated role in "Aftersun," is also reportedly a candidate. Mescal is preparing for a significant role in "Gladiator II" and is also set to portray Paul McCartney in an upcoming Beatles biopic.
Rounding out the reported shortlist is Harris Dickinson, whose work spans "Triangle of Sadness," "The Iron Claw," and "A Murder at the End of the World." Dickinson has demonstrated a versatile range across various genres.
Amazon has yet to officially confirm any of the actors on the reported shortlist, stating that the search is ongoing and further news will be shared when appropriate.
