The search for the next James Bond is nearing a conclusion, with a new actor likely to be cast by the end of the year, according to Amy Pascal, a producer at Amazon MGM.
Pascal told Deadline that the studio is approaching the casting process methodically, acknowledging the challenge of following Daniel Craig's acclaimed tenure. Craig, who defined the role for nearly two decades and starred in five films, most recently 2021's "No Time to Die," has left a significant legacy.
Since Craig's departure, speculation about his successor has been rampant. Amazon, which now holds full creative control of the franchise, has enlisted Nina Gold, a casting director known for her work on "Game of Thrones," for the upcoming Bond film. Gold recently received an Academy Award for Achievement in Casting. Among the rumored candidates for the role are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, whose recent partnership with Omega, the official watchmaker for the Bond franchise, fueled speculation, as well as Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, and Harris Dickinson.
The casting discussions have also touched upon broader conversations, with some punditry expressing unfounded concerns about potential gender or racial re-imaginings of the character. Idris Elba, previously rumored for the role, shared his perspective with GQ, suggesting that the global appeal of Bond might limit the acceptance of a Black actor in the part in certain markets, citing cultural preferences.
The Bond franchise has seen recent success with the critically acclaimed game "007: First Light," which offered a fresh interpretation of the character. It remains to be seen if Amazon MGM will draw any inspiration from IO Interactive's video game for the film's direction.
