James Gunn Clarifies DCU Plans for Batman and Flash, Confirms 'Blue Beetle' Not Canon

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has offered new details regarding the future of Batman and The Flash within the new DC Universe, alongside clarification on the canonical status of certain past projects. Gunn shared these insights through candid responses to fan questions on the social media platform Threads.

Regarding Batman's integration into the DCU, Gunn revealed that the character's suit has not yet been designed, indicating that a full appearance is still some time away. While a cameo in the upcoming film Man of Tomorrow is a possibility, a more substantial introduction is likely tied to the development of The Brave and the Bold.

When questioned about the current status of Wally West, also known as The Flash, Gunn cryptically responded, "Who knows?" This response has led to speculation among fans that Gunn may be sidestepping the question, though no specific Flash project is currently announced, the character's popularity suggests a future appearance is probable.

Canon Status of Past DC Films

Gunn also addressed the canonicity of recent DC films. He confirmed that while Xolo Maridueña will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in Man of Tomorrow, the 2023 film Blue Beetle is not considered canon to the new DCU. He further stated that 2022's Black Adam is also not canon.

Following his directorial work on Man of Tomorrow, Gunn currently has no other directing projects officially announced. While he has dismissed rumors of a live-action Teen Titans film, numerous other projects are in development within the DCU, leaving open the possibility of him taking on further directorial duties.
