James Gunn Confirms Batman and Wonder Woman as 'Diamond Characters' in DCU

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has reiterated that Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are the cornerstone "diamond characters" of the studio's planned 8-10 year roadmap for the DC Universe. Gunn shared this clarification on Threads, addressing questions about the coherence and structure of the ongoing DCU narrative.

Gunn explained that while some projects will be standalone, similar to how the Guardians of the Galaxy films operated, others will be part of a larger interconnected story. He emphasized that each narrative piece should function independently, regardless of whether audiences have consumed every other entry.

The "diamond characters" are central to this overarching plan, with Gunn also identifying smaller characters like Krypto the Superdog, John Stewart, and Peacemaker as potential "diamonds" that can be developed. The studio's strategy also aims to foster "filmmaker freedom," accommodate diverse tones and ratings, and draw inspiration from franchises like Star Wars and the works of George R.R. Martin.

Despite their confirmed status as key figures, Batman and Wonder Woman have had limited direct appearances in the DCU projects released so far. The animated series Creature Commandos offered a glimpse of Batman's silhouette and featured other characters, but Wonder Woman has yet to be seen.

Superman has been more prominent, with his story arc forming a significant part of the DCU's narrative. Projects like the Lanterns series, which received positive reviews, and Clayface, though met with mixed audience reception, are also part of the developing universe. The People v. Gorilla Grodd is also in development.

Batman is slated to feature in his own film, The Brave and the Bold, but no release date has been announced. Discussions have occurred regarding casting, but a definitive role for potential Batman actors has not yet been solidified.

Wonder Woman's future in the DCU remains similarly undefined in terms of casting and specific introduction, though Gunn has affirmed her priority status. Rumors persist about Adria Arjona potentially taking on the role.

In related DC news, a live-action Poison Ivy series is reportedly in early development, with Lauren LeFranc, the showrunner for The Penguin, attached to produce. Casting for this series has also not been confirmed.
