James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has announced that the casting process for the DC Universe's Batman is nearing completion and will begin "not too long" from now. This new iteration of Batman will exist within Gunn's shared DCU, separate from Robert Pattinson's current portrayal, which is expected to remain in its own distinct universe.
Gunn clarified on a recent podcast that rumors of the role already being cast are unfounded. He expressed an openness to considering any actor for the part, including those who may have had smaller roles in previous DC projects like "The Suicide Squad." Gunn stated his priority is to find the "best actor for that role," contrasting this with what he perceives as a historical tendency to cast Batman based on movie star status rather than acting merit.
The age of the next Batman is also a key consideration. Gunn indicated that the actor chosen will likely be close in age to David Corenswet, who is portraying Superman in the DCU. This is because Batman and Superman are envisioned as contemporaries and friends, necessitating a similar age range. This suggests a likely age bracket in the early to mid-30s for the new Batman, a range often considered ideal for the character.
Batman remains a central figure for the future of DC's cinematic endeavors, recognized as one of the "diamond characters" by DC Studios boss Peter Safran. While speculation has linked actors like Alan Ritchson to potential roles, Ritchson himself has confirmed discussions with the studio are for a non-Batman character, with efforts underway to find a suitable part for him. Gunn's approach suggests that the selection process may yield a less familiar face who proves to be the optimal choice for the character, much like the casting of David Corenswet as Superman. With casting expected to commence soon, an announcement regarding the new DCU Batman could potentially arrive next year.
