James Gunn: Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is Canon if She Wants to Return

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has addressed the potential inclusion of Margot Robbie's popular interpretation of Harley Quinn in the forthcoming DC Universe (DCU). While Robbie's performance has been featured in several DC films, including Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad, her character's canon status in the new DCU has remained uncertain.

In a recent podcast appearance, Gunn explained the complexities surrounding Harley Quinn's integration. "I think Harley's relationship to the Joker is specific, right?" Gunn commented, noting that the Joker has not yet been established in the DCU. While Batman has been glimpsed in the animated series Creature Commandos, the presence of his arch-nemesis remains unconfirmed. Gunn suggested that introducing Harley Quinn without addressing her past with the Joker would be challenging.

Gunn acknowledged that Robbie herself might have moved on from the role, especially given her immense success following the Barbie movie and other recent projects. "Margot Robbie is one of my favorite actors to work with," Gunn stated. "She is so good in the movie. Like, we were watching her last night. We were laughing so hard at so much of the stuff she does. She's just so crazy. I love her as Harley. I don't know if she wants to play Harley again. She may be over that."

Despite these uncertainties, Gunn expressed a strong desire to feature Harley Quinn in the DCU. "Harley is a character I'm almost certainly going to use in the DCU," he said. "And if Margot wants to play her, then I'll bend over backwards to explain that in the world." He clarified that if Robbie is not interested in returning, he might consider casting another actor for the role. Ultimately, the decision rests with Robbie. "So what I'm saying is Margot is the one who has to decide whether or not Suicide Squad is canon. This is all on you!"

In related news, Gunn also confirmed that DC Studios is preparing to cast the DCU's Batman. The next DCU film on the horizon is Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for 2027.
