James Turner, a notable artist and designer for The Pokémon Company, has returned to the organization in a new capacity. Turner has been appointed Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design at The Pokémon Company International. He previously departed Game Freak in 2022.
Turner has a long history with the Pokémon franchise, having worked on various titles during his tenure at Game Freak. He served as the art director for Pokémon Sword and Shield, and also designed several Pokémon introduced in the Galar region, alongside alternate forms of existing creatures like the Gigantamax Pikachu. His work on these titles has been recognized by fans, even amidst discussions about the games' features at the time of their release.
In a 2019 interview with Game Informer, Turner discussed his philosophy on Pokémon design. He emphasized the importance of creating creatures that players feel they can befriend, stating, "I would say that an important thing is that every Pokémon you feel like you could be friends with." He elaborated that Pokémon cannot solely be intimidating or scary; there must be an element that evokes a sense of companionship and readiness for adventure.
Turner cited Buzzwole, an Ultra Beast from Generation VI, as an example. Despite its otherworldly and imposing appearance as a bug/fighting-type monster resembling a muscular superhero mosquito, Turner suggested that its inherent "silliness" makes it approachable and something that could be a plausible catch. This approach, he explained, contributes to the series' ability to make even monstrous Pokémon feel relatable and capable of fostering a connection with players. This philosophy helps explain how a diverse range of creatures, from the cute to the intimidating, can coexist within the same universe and resonate with different fans.
Turner's return to The Pokémon Company is anticipated by some to be a positive development, given his deep understanding of the franchise's aesthetic and design principles. His previous contributions include the design of Professor Turo in the recent Scarlet and Violet games.
