Jamie Dornan Admits Pressure of Replacing Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn

Jamie Dornan, known for his roles in Fifty Shades of Grey and Once Upon a Time, has acknowledged the immense pressure of portraying Aragorn in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a role indelibly linked to Viggo Mortensen's performance in Peter Jackson's original trilogy.

Dornan expressed his feelings in an interview with L'Officiel, stating, "I've been asked to play a super-iconic role, and I'll do my best. But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo." He added that he feels "honored to try to recapture at least some of the energy he originally brought to the character" and emphasized that he is not attempting to surpass Mortensen's portrayal. Dornan will be one of the few newcomers to the franchise, as Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen are set to reprise their roles as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, respectively.

Director Andy Serkis, who will also return as Gollum, has indicated that the film will utilize digital de-aging technology for some returning cast members. This makes the decision to recast Aragorn a notable point of interest.

Plot Details for The Hunt for Gollum

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is expected to focus on Aragorn and Gandalf's pursuit of Gollum to glean information about the One Ring. While specific details remain unconfirmed, the narrative will likely bridge the period between Bilbo's 111th birthday and Gandalf's return to the Shire as depicted in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Joining Dornan in the cast are newcomers Anya Taylor-Joy and Leo Woodall, along with Kate Winslet. Lee Pace will reprise his role as Thranduil from The Hobbit film series. Warner Bros. has slated The Hunt for Gollum for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027. Prior to this, fans can return to Middle-earth with the third season of Amazon's The Rings of Power, which is expected to premiere soon.
