Jason Statham's latest action film, Mutiny, is facing a critical backlash even before its theatrical debut. As of this week, the film holds a "rotten" 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 22 reviews.

Directed by Jean-François Richet, known for Plane, Mutiny features Statham as an operative with a background in law enforcement or special forces aboard a human trafficking vessel. The premise centers on Statham combating antagonists, a familiar role for the actor.

Reviewers have expressed disappointment with the film's execution. Matt Goldberg of Commentary Track described Mutiny as a "waste" of Statham's talents, while another unnamed critic noted its lack of personality, stating it "has so little personality that you could place it in a bus station, and the experience wouldn't change one bit." The sentiment suggests that the film falls into the category of poorly executed action rather than the enjoyable schlock Statham has often delivered.

However, the film is not without its defenders. Owen Gleiberman, writing for Variety, commented on the effectiveness of the revenge narrative, suggesting that "It’s all in the timing — the rhythm of revenge murder that’s perfect, because it’s done by any means necessary. Jason Statham is keeping that dream alive." Ian Sandwell of Digital Spy echoed this, believing that while the movie "won't convert anybody who foolishly isn't a fan of 'Jason Statham gets revenge', but everybody else will have a damn good time." This perspective frames the film as a straightforward Statham revenge thriller, appealing directly to existing fans of his work.

Mutiny is scheduled to be released in theaters on August 21.
