Author Jeff VanderMeer has announced "Abdication," the forthcoming fifth and final novel in his critically acclaimed Southern Reach series. The series, which chronicles expeditions into a mysterious and dangerous region known as Area X, began with the publication of "Annihilation" in 2014.

VanderMeer revealed the news via social media, stating, "Pleased to finally announce... Abdication, the last Southern Reach novel!" He also shared a teaser for the book:

There will come the days of the watcher, the drowned woman and the shadow of a man who keeps falling apart with each step, but first comes the moment the birds appear at night from the gaps between the stars, far from home.

A photograph of the manuscript's table of contents page was also shared by VanderMeer.

The Southern Reach series includes "Annihilation" (2014), followed by "Authority" and "Acceptance." The narrative was expanded in 2024 with the release of "Absolution." All installments center on a clandestine agency tasked with managing access to Area X.

"Annihilation" received a film adaptation in 2018, directed by Alex Garland and starring Natalie Portman. Reviewing the film, IGN noted that while "Annihilation isn’t always as consistently well-executed or involving as it might have been," it was a "bold undertaking that doesn’t play it safe and features some strong performances."

"Abdication" is slated for publication by Macmillan Publishers on October 12, 2027, and preorders are available on Amazon.
