Jennifer English, recognized for her performance as Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3 and her BAFTA award-winning role in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has announced her withdrawal from the lead role of Gwendolyn in the upcoming game Tides of Annihilation. The decision stems from a need to "properly look after [her] mental and physical health," English stated.

Tides of Annihilation, slated for a 2025 release, features Gwendolyn as the sole survivor of an invasion who can summon Arthurian Knights to combat mythological foes. Despite its derivative premise, the game has garnered significant attention, appearing on Steam's most wishlisted titles.

Developer Eclipse Glow Games confirmed English's departure, expressing understanding and respect for her decision. "While we were, of course, saddened by her decision, we completely understood and respected Jennifer in prioritizing her well-being," the studio said in a statement on X. The studio also noted English's continued support during the transition, including assisting in finding a replacement actor.

In an Instagram story shared on Reddit, English elaborated on her choice, explaining the necessity to "slow down and reassess the commitments" she has undertaken. She expressed gratitude for her involvement since the game's inception and praised the development team. English also confirmed her role in introducing a new, talented actor to the team for the part of Gwendolyn, expressing excitement for the new performer's interpretation. She will continue to be involved with Tides of Annihilation in an advisory capacity.

The studio has already selected a new actor to voice Gwendolyn, who is currently recording lines for the game's hands-on demo set to be playable at Gamescom in August. The name of the replacement actor has not yet been disclosed.
