Jennifer English, known for her work on Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has stepped away from the protagonist role of Gwendolyn in the upcoming game Tides of Annihilation. The decision was reportedly due to mental health concerns, according to a statement from developer Eclipse Glow Games.
Director Ary Chen described English's departure as "quite an unexpected turn of events," but emphasized the team's respect for her decision. "For us, health also comes first," Chen stated. Despite stepping down from the main performance, English has assisted the studio in finding a new voice actor for Gwendolyn and provided guidance throughout the process. She also continues to serve as the voice-over director for the game.
While the exact amount of work English had completed before her departure is unclear, Chen indicated that not all voice lines had been recorded, as the game remains in active development. A new voice actor has been brought in to fill the role, and early impressions suggest an effort to match English's previous performance from earlier trailers.
Tides of Annihilation is currently slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game aims to be a character action title with significant visual spectacle, and early gameplay previews suggest the new voice performance adequately fills the void left by English's departure.
