Zach Cregger, fresh off the success of his Resident Evil adaptation, is moving forward with his next directorial project, a sci-fi thriller titled The Flood. The film has secured Jennifer Lawrence, an Oscar-winning actress known for her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, as its lead.
Lawrence is the first major cast member announced for The Flood, which Cregger will write, produce, and direct. Cregger expressed his enthusiasm for the casting, telling Men's Health, "Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role." Lawrence's previous work in films like Mother and Die My Love has explored complex and sometimes unconventional narratives, aligning with Cregger's apparent interest in cinematic strangeness.
While details about the plot of The Flood remain scarce, Cregger has indicated it shares thematic similarities with 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film is described as a sci-fi thriller and may delve into themes of human nature and artificial intelligence. Cregger's previous directorial work, Weapons, featured a notable ensemble cast including Josh Brolin and Benedict Wong.
The Flood is slated for release on August 11, 2028, and will be distributed by Warner Bros., the same studio behind Cregger's Weapons. The project is also being produced by Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg's production company, alongside Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee and Miri Yoon.
Cregger currently has no other directorial projects announced beyond The Flood. A prequel to his film Weapons, titled Gladys, is in production for a 2028 release, though Cregger will not be directing that project. Following the critical and commercial success of the Resident Evil film, a sequel is widely anticipated, though no official announcements have been made.
