John Cena has officially ended his physical career in WWE, confirming his retirement from professional wrestling in December after a nearly 25-year tenure. The 17-time world champion made his final in-ring appearance in Washington, D.C., where he submitted to Gunther on December 13.
Speculation among fans about a potential return to the ring has been put to rest by Cena himself. In a recent interview with the Today Show, he stated, "I'm not going to perform again physically. There is no chance that I'll perform again physically." He elaborated that he and WWE mutually agreed that at 49 years old, it was the right time to step away after dedicating 23 years to physical service in the business.
While his active wrestling days are over, Cena is not severing ties with WWE entirely. He will continue with the company in non-wrestling capacities, serving as an ambassador. This includes involvement in the upcoming John Cena Classic in December, a live event that will draw on the nostalgia for his WWE character, with the audience ultimately deciding the champion.
Beyond his WWE career, Cena has established a notable acting presence, notably playing the DC anti-hero Peacemaker since 2021. His involvement in James Gunn's rebooted DC Universe is expected to continue, with potential appearances in upcoming DCU films or a third season of Peacemaker. He is currently promoting the action-comedy Matchbox: The Movie, inspired by the Mattel toy brand.
Despite these definitive statements, the nature of professional wrestling often sees performers return after announcing retirement. Cena himself previously alluded to the possibility of a return, telling Good Morning America in June of the previous year, "There is no way... I don't want to speak in absolutes, because I don't want to close any opportunity." However, he also emphasized his respect for the fans and his desire not to disrespect the connection built over a quarter-century for personal gain by resuming his in-ring career after stepping back.
