John Cena: Peacemaker is on Hold While James Gunn Rebuilds the DCU

John Cena has stated that his character, Peacemaker, is currently taking a backseat as DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn focuses on establishing the broader DC Universe. Cena, who originated the role in The Suicide Squad and later starred in the HBO series Peacemaker, explained that Gunn needs to prioritize core DC characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

"Now, this dude gets to play with a whole box of toys, and because you get the whole box of toys, you have to address the really valuable ones first – and I understand that," Cena said in an interview on Happy, Sad, Confused. He added, "Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman… There are so many valuable IPs. I'm not in a leadership spot, but if I was, I'd be making those plays first. That's OK."

Cena confirmed he has not worn the Peacemaker helmet since the previous season of the show concluded. He expressed his willingness to reprise the role whenever Gunn requires it, noting that the character makes him a better performer. However, he acknowledges Gunn's current responsibilities in overseeing the DCU's foundational elements.

Gunn is currently directing the upcoming Superman film, set for a 2025 release, and its sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for 2027. His slate also includes projects like Lanterns, Clayface, and The Brave and the Bold, alongside casting for iconic roles. This extensive workload means that Peacemaker's return to the spotlight is not an immediate priority.

While Peacemaker Season 3 has not been officially greenlit and Gunn has suggested it's not a current focus, the character remains significant to the DCU. Gunn previously stated that Peacemaker is "really important" to him, and Cena believes there is still "unfinished business" for the character. The actor also noted the positive reception to his portrayal, suggesting that fans would welcome a return.

The DCU is being actively developed, with projects like Clayface and Lanterns introducing new characters and storylines. The status of Peacemaker remains somewhat uncertain, but his presence in the wider DC Universe is not entirely ruled out, potentially appearing in future projects as the cinematic universe continues to take shape.
