Josh Brolin Teases Potential Thanos vs. Doctor Doom Showdown in Future Avengers Films

Josh Brolin, known for his portrayal of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has voiced his interest in a potential on-screen clash between his character and Doctor Doom. Speaking at New York Comic Con 2026, Brolin shared his thoughts on the possibility of such a monumental villainous confrontation, particularly with the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday and the anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars.

Brolin, who was promoting his new film Whalefall, directed by Brian Duffield, was asked about a hypothetical scenario pitting Thanos against Doctor Doom. He indicated that he would welcome such a matchup, expressing particular enthusiasm for Robert Downey Jr.'s upcoming role as Doctor Doom. "Any confrontation with Downey, I like the idea of. I love that he’s doing that, by the way. I can’t wait to see it," Brolin stated.

While Brolin did not definitively confirm any plans for a Thanos and Doctor Doom encounter, he alluded to the possibility within future MCU installments, contingent on Marvel Studios' approval. The potential for this showdown draws parallels from the comic books, where Doctor Doom, after acquiring the powers of the Beyonders during the 2015 Secret Wars event, brutally defeated Thanos by tearing him apart.

The conversation about these powerful villains emerged as audiences anticipate the next major Avengers films. Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release on December 18, with Avengers: Secret Wars expected to follow.

Whalefall is scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 16.
