DC Studios has officially cast the leads for its upcoming animated series based on Tom King's acclaimed 2017-2019 Mister Miracle comic run. Josh Hutcherson, known for his roles in The Hunger Games and various internet memes, will voice the titular escape artist Scott Free. Mackenzie Davis, recognized for her work in Station Eleven and Happiest Season, has been cast as his wife, the formidable Big Barda.
DC Studios co-head Peter Safran revealed the casting in a recent interview with IGN. He also praised the script for the series, which was written entirely by Tom King, calling it "dynamite." Safran expressed excitement about the adaptation, noting that "it's a beautiful book and the adaptation is fantastic."
The official synopsis for the series outlines a perilous journey for Scott Free. As a celebrated escape artist, he must confront the possibility of escaping death itself. With war escalating between the planets Apocalypse and New Genesis, and Scott's adoptive father Darkseid seemingly close to obtaining the Anti-Life Equation, Scott and Barda's carefully constructed life on Earth is threatened. The synopsis hints that the Anti-Life Equation may be influencing Scott's mind, dredging up past trauma and jeopardizing his happiness, as he attempts to save his family, his world, and himself.
In other DC Studios news, Safran also provided an update on Matt Reeves' The Batman Part 2. Despite a temporary halt in production due to a family matter, Safran assured that filming will resume, dismissing any possibility of the project being canceled. This sentiment echoes recent statements from star Robert Pattinson, who expressed confidence that the film would proceed.
Further updates included confirmation that early development on the Absolute Batman animated series is underway, with Scott Snyder writing scripts. DC Studios co-head James Gunn is reportedly also in the process of writing a new directorial project, though its specifics remain undisclosed.
