K/DA Dominates as League of Legends' Virtual Music Groups Return

Riot Games has resurrected three of its most popular virtual pop groups from the League of Legends universe: K/DA, True Damage, and Heartsteel. While all three have made comebacks in anticipation of the game's annual Worlds finals, K/DA has emerged as the clear frontrunner.

Initially, Riot Music found significant success in the late 2010s with groups like K/DA, whose song 'Pop/Stars' topped charts and earned platinum certification, and True Damage with their track 'Giants.' More recently, in 2023, the developer introduced the boyband Heartsteel. However, after these initial successes, Riot Music's output for these groups became infrequent, with Heartsteel and True Damage largely becoming one-hit wonders, and K/DA remaining largely dormant for years.

This trend has shifted recently. Heartsteel was the first to return with the song 'Live My Life,' which was described as a departure from their previous persona and met with a lukewarm reception. True Damage followed with 'Know My Name,' a track that retained some of the group's original sound, though the accompanying music video drew criticism for focusing heavily on esports player Faker rather than the virtual champions themselves.

The most significant return has been K/DA's. Their new single 'Firestarter,' produced with the animation studio Fortiche, which previously worked on Arcane and K/DA's 'Pop/Stars' music video, has been met with considerable praise. The group has also released a four-song EP that showcases high production value and features the returning vocals of K-pop stars Soyeon and Miyeon from (G)I-dle, providing a familiar and polished sound.

The author suggests that K/DA's enduring popularity stems from its ability to break beyond the confines of the MOBA genre. While all three groups will share a stage during the Worlds finals in New York, Riot's continued focus on K/DA indicates it remains the developer's favored virtual act, a sentiment echoed by the article's author.
