After six years of silence, Riot Games' virtual K-pop girl group K/DA, known for its ties to League of Legends, has returned with "Firestarter," a comeback single and music video produced by Fortiche, the animation studio responsible for the acclaimed series Arcane.
The new single leads K/DA's upcoming EP, slated for release on October 21, marking their second major release since "All Out" in 2020. The group's lineup for this era includes MIYEON and SOYEON of K-pop group (G)I-DLE, alongside new vocalists Sophie Powers and Mimi Webb. Notably absent from this release is Seraphine, who was previously voiced by Lexie Liu. The track was produced by Kill Dave and Sebastien Najand, who has been instrumental in shaping K/DA's signature sound since its inception.
"Firestarter" arrived as a surprise drop on October 19, reportedly due to leaks that had been teasing the group's return. The music video quickly garnered significant attention, surpassing 4.3 million views on YouTube within its first nine hours.
This release marks a busy period for Riot Games' virtual music projects. The company has recently seen comebacks from Heartsteel with "Live My Life" and True Damage with "Know My Name," the latter of which served as the first League of Legends Worlds anthem from a Riot virtual band. With Pentakill also collaborating on an orchestral Worlds theme, K/DA's return places all of Riot's major virtual groups back in the spotlight.
A Match Made in Animation Heaven
Fortiche's distinct animation style, a blend of 3D CGI with hand-painted textures and 2D elements, imbues "Firestarter" with a visually rich aesthetic. The music video is packed with meticulous details and subtle references recognizable to League of Legends players, such as in-game abilities integrated into the choreography, without alienating viewers unfamiliar with the game. The studio skillfully balances vibrant colors with brief visual disruptions and infrared-inspired sequences, creating a spectacle that showcases years of creative collaboration.
Catchy Beats and Fashion-Forward Presentation
Musically, "Firestarter" combines a catchy rhythm with sharp rap sections, punctuated by melodic pre-choruses that build anticipation for the explosive chorus. The track balances assertive energy with memorable melodies, resulting in a contagious hook.
The visual composition extends to the members' costumes, which are styled with a high-fashion sensibility, and their choreography. Inspired by drag ballroom culture, the dance routines feature precise movements and theatrical flair, demanding attention.
With "Firestarter," K/DA reaffirms its status as a prominent virtual act. Riot Games and Fortiche have delivered a music video rich in visual ambition, complemented by a track that appeals to both dedicated fans and a broader audience.
