Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has affirmed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will not experience a complete reboot after the conclusion of Phase Six with Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Feige indicated that elements from the comics will serve as a guide for the franchise's future narrative.
During a conversation with Josh Horowitz of Happy, Sad, Confused, Feige addressed fan speculation regarding the aftermath of upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. When directly asked if the 2027 film would result in a reboot, Feige responded with a definitive "No." He elaborated that while he "always" looks to the comics for storytelling inspiration, citing Jonathan Hickman's 2015 Secret Wars run specifically, it offers a "nice roadmap to where we can go."
Hickman's Secret Wars, which spanned 2015 and 2016, depicted a multiverse-ending event drawing characters from across the Marvel universe. This comic series is expected to inform the MCU's trajectory following its own adaptation of Secret Wars.
Previous statements from Marvel executives have fueled theories about a potential reboot. In 2025, Feige mentioned that the upcoming X-Men film would help "reset" the MCU, clarifying that it would not necessarily be a full reboot. He described a reboot as a "scary word" with varied interpretations, suggesting a focus on a "reset, singular timeline" which would commence with the X-Men.
Adding to the discussion, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars co-director Joe Russo commented last month that the upcoming Avengers film would bring the cinematic universe "back to phase zero," implying a fresh start. Russo stated that the filmmakers aimed to ensure the new direction "isn’t leaning on anything from the past."
Details surrounding Secret Wars remain scarce, though a trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was recently released. The film is anticipated to introduce a new chapter for the MCU, with Doctor Doom expected to play a significant role. Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. Prior to this, audiences can anticipate Spider-Man: Brand New Day next week and Avengers: Doomsday on December 18.
