Killzone Remaster Reportedly in Development with Guerrilla Games and People Can Fly

A new report from Mp1st indicates that a remaster of the iconic PlayStation first-person shooter series Killzone is in development. The project is said to involve Guerrilla Games, the original creator of the franchise, collaborating with a third-party studio, which is believed to be People Can Fly. The studio is known for its work on games such as Bulletstorm and Outriders, and for co-developing multiple Gears of War titles.

Guerrilla Games is currently focused on Horizon Hunters Gathering, a multiplayer monster-hunting game set in the Horizon universe. However, the Killzone remaster was reportedly slated to be Guerrilla's next project. This plan shifted after Horizon Hunters Gathering underwent a reboot due to negative feedback, prompting the studio to prioritize its current trajectory.

The Killzone series was once PlayStation's flagship FPS franchise. The original game, released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, received mixed reviews. Its successor, Killzone 2, garnered critical acclaim with a Metacritic score of 91 and numerous awards.

While the specific title within the series being remastered has not been confirmed, sources suggest it will be the original Killzone. This would not be the first time the inaugural game received an updated release; the Killzone Trilogy in 2011 featured a remastered version for the PlayStation 3 with enhanced resolution and trophy support.

Should this report prove accurate, it would mark the first new Killzone game in over a decade, following Killzone: Shadow Fall, released in 2013 as a PlayStation 4 launch title. That entry was met with a lukewarm reception, with some critics deeming it "stuck in the past" and reliant on "shooter clichés." Despite the critical reception, multiplayer servers for Shadow Fall remained operational until 2022.

Details regarding a release date or official announcement for the Killzone remaster have not yet emerged. Given that the project is reportedly in the early stages of development, plans could still evolve. Further information is anticipated once Horizon Hunters Gathering is released.
