The recently concluded 15th season of the animated comedy King of the Hill culminated in an episode titled “Propane Recall,” which saw Hank Hill reclaim a significant stake in Strickland Propane. Showrunner and Executive Producer Saladin Patterson, alongside cast members Kathy Najimy, Toby Huss, Stephen Root, Pamela Adlon, Lauren Tom, and Ashley Gardner, have shared insights into the finale's development, its narrative choices, and its emotional weight.
The season finale was not initially conceived as such, according to Patterson. "We broke that episode, probably [in the middle of] the season,” he stated. “And then when it came together, we were like, 'It kind of feels like a season finale.' And that's what led us to just put it at the end." The episode explores Hank's decision to leave Strickland Propane five years prior and his subsequent move to Saudi Arabia with Peggy, a storyline that emerged organically rather than being planned from the season's outset. "Season 15 was a lot about exploring where [the characters] are in life now," Patterson added.
A significant plot point in “Propane Recall” reveals that Bobby Hill will live with Lucky and Luanne when Hank and Peggy relocate to Saudi Arabia. Patterson explained this choice as a deliberate tribute to the late cast members Tom Petty and Brittany Murphy, who voiced Lucky and Luanne, respectively. "It felt like, okay, at least for now in this moment, not knowing about the future, this feels like a satisfying way to give a wink and nod and homage to Lucky and Luanne in a way that's organic to the story. They're the ones that took care of Bobby. That felt good to say."
The episode also features an extended flashback sequence, a creative element that resonated with the cast. Pamela Adlon, who voices Bobby, described it as "candy for us," highlighting how it infused the show with a sense of humanity by revisiting past memories and introducing new ones. Stephen Root, who portrays Bill Dauterive, likened the flashback to viewing "home movies for real-life people," noting its effectiveness in visually representing memories.
Secondary characters also made notable appearances in the flashback. Stephen Root reprised his role as Hank's former boss, Buck Strickland, a character whose decision to promote his son over Hank initiated the season's central conflict. Root expressed his enjoyment in revisiting familiar characters, stating, "It is a joy as an actor to be able to go into that character again and know this is one of the characters that ain't going to change. He's all about himself." Toby Huss, who voices Dale Gribble and several other characters, shared his enthusiasm for re-engaging with fan favorites like Joe Jack and M.F. Thatherton. "It's always fun to do any of these characters again, man," he said.
The season's conclusion sees Hank acquire a 51% ownership of Strickland Propane from Buck. Patterson noted that this development, while a significant promotion for Hank, introduces new dynamics for the confirmed Season 16. "Hank is the owner, but remember he's only 51%,” Patterson explained. “Which means Buck is still 49% owner, which means he's still involved. Hank clearly has been prepared for this, but Buck's a different personality. And being a boss is different from what Hank is used to." Patterson affirmed that the show will remain true to its core while allowing characters to evolve. "It's not going back and retreading what they did so well in the original,” he said. "Hank is a new person, a different person. He's the boss now, and that’s a unique challenge."
