King of the Hill showrunner Saladin Patterson has addressed the recent narrative developments concerning John Redcorn and Nancy Gribble in the show's fifteenth season, clarifying that the changes were not a direct result of the tragic passing of voice actor Jonathan Joss.

Patterson explained that the decision to pause John Redcorn's affair with Nancy Gribble was a creative one, intended to explore the evolving dynamics of long-term marriages within the series. "We wanted to tell stories now that the characters in this age and phase of life would be dealing with," Patterson stated. "Nancy and Dale, Hank and Peggy, being couples that have been married 20 to 30 years, it's a very common thing for you to be turning that lens back on your relationship and saying, ‘Who are we as a couple now? We've changed. We're different people than we were when we got married.’ We wanted to explore some of those things."

This narrative direction was established in season 15, episode 5, titled "The Best Little Marriage in Texas." In this episode, Nancy Gribble indicates to John Redcorn that her "headaches," a euphemism for their affair, have subsided following a marriage retreat with her husband, Dale. John Redcorn is depicted shedding a tear before departing, suggesting a potential end to their long-standing relationship. This storyline was conceptualized and nearly completed prior to Joss's death.

"The truth of the matter is, we had broken and completed that episode well before he passed away," Patterson told Polygon. "It feels like it's a reaction to it, but that episode was almost in the can when he passed away."

Jonathan Joss, who voiced John Redcorn in season 14 and contributed to season 15 prior to his death in June 2025, was credited in the episode. His passing occurred two months before the premiere of King of the Hill's fourteenth season. While his husband described the attack as a hate crime, authorities stated no evidence supported this motive.

Patterson, alongside creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, had initially conceived the pause in the affair as a temporary measure. "In our minds, we could always bring John Redcorn back anytime we wanted to," Patterson said, noting that the character had occasionally featured in stories after the affair initially ended in season 4 of the original series.

However, Joss's death has introduced a new layer of complexity to any potential future for the relationship. "Now that [Jonathan Joss has] passed away, we have to decide if that pause is going to be permanent or not," Patterson acknowledged. "It's still open-ended, similar to the Luanne and Lucky of it all. If stories lend themselves to be better served by reintroducing that relationship, we're certainly open to doing it. We then have to deal with the real-life challenge of casting."

He also noted that Joss was the second actor to voice John Redcorn, suggesting that recasting might be considered if the narrative warranted it, though it would be a decision not taken lightly. King of the Hill season 15 is currently available on Hulu.
